I will be analyzing the first two minutes of the psychological thriller Se7en. This opening sequence is clearly showing something unusual and frightening. The close up of the of different objects are creepy, and the music also adds tension to this, the creepiness at the beginning of the film is showing that this film is going to be a thriller. This is similar to our Fixation, as ours also shows our character doing different actions. This is also similar to our film Fixation as Se7en also used dark and bleak colours, there are a lot of grays and shadowing, this shows a darker side to the characters. The text in Se7en is placed in different places each time instead of the same spot.
Se7en starts with an extreme close up of the spine of a book, then you see fingers flicking the pages over. Then there is a close up of a photograph of two hands, wrinkly and dark, this adds to the creepiness and tension of the film. The film then uses a series of extreme close ups to see some actions which are edited together quickly. A extreme close up of dirty hands fiddling with a small object, which is in the picture on the right top row. Then another series of fast pace editing of a series of actions happen, this builds tension. Then another extreme close up was used to show somebody writing in a book. Extreme close ups and close ups are used to build tension and mystery in the beginning of the film to grab peoples attention. Also the same with the fast pace editing of different actions, this is the effect we aimed for by filming a 'normal' day that the film played 'tricks' on the audience like a Mind Game.
The title screens are shown in white writing not red to symbolize danger, the white writing is blurry which also shows mystery. The next actions were not as quickly cut together, then it starts flickering from actions and the title screens. The next shots are the hands crossing out words in the book and flicking the pages, the shadowed hand through the pages gives tension as there is still only hands and objects being shown in the film, no other part of a human body. The next shot shows a photo or drawing of a persons head and shoulders, the hands then smudge across the eyes, then it flicks to the same shot but the full face as been crossed out.
The following shots then consist of more quick paced actions, of photographs, pages of writing and wiping a needle clean looks like blood on the needle. This part is similar to when 'Gilbert' wipes the knifes clean and places them onto a clean surface in Fixation. The next shot in Se7en is more title shots then goes into the hands sewing the page of writing, which is also shown above on the bottom row middle picture. The hands then show some tweezers with an hair on the end being put into a little plastic pouch, then there is images of a female, that you see a few times before and after whilst hes flicking through the book again.
Then you see the hands cutting the word "God" out of some money, then shows books as if it was a library, on shelves. Se7en is similar to our Fixation because there is a series of actions in both which seem normal, then shows a difference to what that 'normal' day is. The fact that the writing on both Se7en AND Fixation is in white is another similarity to show they are not aiming straight towards danger and there will be actions in the film that lead up to the danger of a character. The images below for the Fixation storyboard show the first as a normal day, then goes to darker images never revealing the main character 'Gilbert's' face.
